Best Korean Dramas Of 2018 (July-Oct.)

Best Korean Dramas 2018

We had a lot of dramas aired in the 3rd quarter of 2018.  So, here is a list of dramas that in my opinion are the best Korean dramas of 2018 for the period of July to Oct. To be included in this list, the premiere episode of the drama must air on or after July 1st, 2018. This list is based on my personal choices and biases and it could differ from popular public opinions. They are in order according to their airing date. So shall we check them out?

Your House Helper

Best Korean Dramas 2018

Title: Your House Helper

Korean: 당신의 하우스헬퍼

Network: KBS2

Episodes: 32 (half-hour each)

Rating: 3.6/5

Cast: Ha Seok-Jin, Bona (WJSN), Jo Hee-Bong. Go Won-Hee

Aired: July 4 – August 29, 2018

Kim Ji-Woon, played by Ha Seok-Jin (Radiant Office, Drinking Solo) while trying to commit suicide is saved by Lee So-hee (Shim Yi-Young). After some time they start dating but one day, she suddenly disappears. In present he is working as a house helper with the help of Tae-soo (Jo Hee-bong), he helps his customer not only with cleaning their houses but also with problems in their personal life.

He then meets Im Da-young (Bona), who is struggling to deal with her work and her co-workers. He starts working as her housekeeper and helps her overcome difficulties.

Why I liked It:

If you have seen Ha Seok-jin’s above-mentioned dramas (Radiant Office and Drinking Solo) and liked them then this is right in your alley. His character starts quite similar to the characters of those two dramas (straightforward, know it all and handsome). This drama is more of a Slice of life than romance in my opinion. Bona also did quite a good job and I would disagree with people who said she was not the right choice. Side stories were lacking a bit of finishing touches but still enjoyable.

So, if you want something simple and an easy drama to watch give it a go.

Mr. Sunshine

Best Korean Dramas 2018

Title: Mr. Sunshine

Korean: 미스터 션샤인

Network: tVN

Episodes: 24

Rating: 4.1/5

Cast: Lee Byung Hun, Kim Tae Ri, Yoo Yeon Seok, Kim Min Jung, Byun Yo Han

Aired: July 7 – September 30, 2018

A young boy goes to America during the American expedition of Korea (1871) and returns as a Marine Officer. Filled with hatred against people who caused his parents death. He comes looking for revenge to his so-called “Motherland”.

Why I Liked it:

Stellar cast, excellent performances, and a good story make it an excellent watch. It was also the highest rated in viewership, cable TV drama of the year 2018 (at the time of the writing). It was beautiful, heartbreaking, sometimes funny and engaging from start to finish. The conversations between the three leading men were hilarious. I found their romantic chemistry (Bromance) more enjoyable than the leading couple. I wasn’t much invested in the romance between the leading couple (too much age difference).

Unlike the other dramas in the list, this one is more emotionally demanding. So have some tissues ready when watching this.

My ID is Gangnam Beauty

Best Korean Dramas 2018

Title: My ID is Gangnam Beauty

Korean: 내 아이디는 강남미인

Network: jTBC

Episodes: 16

Rating: 3.6/5

Cast: Im Soo-Hyang, Cha Eun-Woo, Kwak Dong-Yeon, Park Joo-Mi

Aired: July 27-September 15 2018

Kang Mi-Rae (Im Soo-Hyang) was bullied in high school because of her ugly appearance. She gets plastic surgery done before she starts her university. Her timid personality remains the same. People are now nice to her but after they found about her surgery. They start calling her “Gangnam Beauty” in a derogatory manner.

Do Kyung-Seok (Cha Eun-Woo) has a cold personality and great looks. He studied with Mi-Rae for some time during their school time. He starts standing up for her and they both start falling in love.

Why I Liked It:

Acting wise it’s a hit and miss but with looks, it’s a Hit as you would have expected from the title. The story is not new, characters are not special but that doesn’t mean the show is bad. The villainous character of Soo-A, I would watch it just so that I could hate her. Big kudos to Jo Woo-Ri for playing it so well.

If you enjoyed Cheese in the Trap then you are going to like it as well. If not well then at least give it a try. In the end, it will come down to personal choice.

100 Days My Prince

Best Korean Dramas 2018

Drama: 100 Days My Prince

Korean: 백일의 낭군님

Network: tVN

Episodes: 16

Rating: 4.1/5

Cast: Do Kyung-Soo (D.O.), Nam Ji-Hyun, Kim Sun-Ho, Jo Seong-Ha, Heo Jeong-Min

Aired: September 10 – October 30, 2018

A crown prince loses his memory while attacked and starts living as a commoner. He becomes the husband of a lady to save her from punishment and both falls in love with each other. But he has to return to the palace to find out who tried to kill him.

His commoner wife name is Hong-Shim and her brother is the one who tried to kill the prince. She is also the prince’s first love.

Why I Liked It:

The premise may make it sound like sad and mellow and that it is but it is also very funny. Great performance by D.O. gives it an extra excuse for his fans to watch and recommend it. This performance will bring him out of Idol-actor category and into a proper actor. This drama is Joseon version of Shopping King Louis, just a bit darker (just a bit). So if you have seen Shopping King Louis and enjoyed it then you are going to enjoy it as well.

The Guest

Best Korean Dramas 2018

Drama: The Guest

Korean: 손: The Guest

Network: OCN

Episodes: 16

Rating: 3.8/5

Cast: Kim Dae-Wook, Kim Jae-Wook, Jung Eun-Chae, Ahn Nae-Sang

Aired: September 12 – November 1, 2018

Yoon Hwa-Pyung was born to a shaman family and is a psychic. His family members were killed by a powerful demon. The demon members also killed family members of Choi-Yoon and Kil-Young. These three come together after 20 years and look for that demon. The demon is still possessing people and continues killing spree. Choi-Yoon who came from religious family has turned into an exorcist priest. Kil-young works as a police officer. These three work “together” to stop the crimes and catch the demon.

Why I Liked It:

This is the darkest drama on the list. It deals with ghosts, exorcism, supernatural etc everything that I enjoy. So it’s not for the faint hearted or if you are not into horror mysteries. The story is excellent and it will keep you at the edge until the end. The performances were great and whole atmosphere of the drama was really believable. I will highly recommend you to give it a try and I’m sure you will be hooked on it.

Honorable Mentions:

Ping Pong Ball

Cast: Ji Soo, Yoo Jae-Myung

The only reason it is here and not in the main list is that its only two episodes long. This is quite short which makes it an easy watch. But that is also its only flaw. I wished it was at least 10 episodes long but it still a must watch. Read full review.

Cast: Kim Jung-Hyun, Seohyun

This drama is total garbage unless you are Jung-Hyun’s fan. If you liked him in Waikiki and School 2017 and want to see more of him this then go ahead. When he is on the screen drama is good other than that it’s pure crap.

Devilish Charm

Cast: Choi Jin-Hyuk, Son Ha-Yoon

This is another Rom-Com it’s sweet and enjoyable. If you enjoy sweet romance titles than add this to your list.

Dishonorable Mention:

Familiar Wife

Cast: Ji Sung, Han Ji-Min

I had high hopes for this one, especially with such a great cast. It’s not bad but it’s not great either. This is mediocre and I was totally disappointed because I had such high expectations. It is a mixture of Go Back Couple and Tomorrow With You but is worse than both of them.

This was my list of best Korean dramas of 2018 from July to October. Do you guys agree or disagree, let me know your thoughts in the comments. Share it on social media if you enjoyed the list.
